A Standardised Procurement Classification for Local Government
The need for a standard approach to procurement Classification has been recognised by an increasing number of local authorities for some time, but the increased focus on the efficiency and service improvement delivery agenda has meant that this has, now more than ever, become a key issue.
The importance of being able to share accurate and reliable expenditure information between authorities and other local public sector bodies for collaborative and analytical purposes has been recognised by chief officers and operational managers.
Without such information, it is impossible to create business cases for collaborative work, or seek new opportunities for driving out cost savings and effectively plan for future contract activities.
Additionally, there is an increasing need to share information between regions so that decisions can be taken on the appropriate level for collaboration.
Agreement has been reached by the Directors of all nine Regional Centres of Excellence that the common approach to classification, known as Proclass, would be encouraged and implemented.
Please see attached further information about the derivation of ProClass and its applicability, the structure itself and mappings to other common classifications and coding structures.
