Building on the successful Peer Review programme that ran earlier this year, the Waste Services Programme plans to set-up and facilitate a South West Waste Officer Network. This forum will enable authorities from across the region to exchange ideas, share best practice, identify possible synergies and hear speakers discuss developments from both National and Regional perspectives. To kick this off a Launch event was run on December 7th 11am at Manley House in Exeter.)
The launch event provided an opportunity to hear speakers talk about the government partnership agenda and practical examples of partnership working from both the region and more widely. Speakers included:
- Sarah Fairbrother who leads for Defra on partnership working and the proposed power to create Joint Waste Authorities;
- Steve Read and Steve Palfrey from the Somerset Waste Partnership who have worked on the development and agreement of a single virtual waste authority and the agreement of a single waste collection contract;
- David Greenfield from the South East Centre of Excellence who has excellent experience regarding what can be achieved through partnership working; and
- Joe Papineschi, a Eunomia director who has worked closely with Somerset in the development of that project and with other authorities from around the country.
There were also workshop sessions at which officers were able to consider and discuss practical partnership initiatives of particular interest to their authority and to consider what the prospects are for partnership in their sub-region.
